the opposite of (x+y) is -(x+y), therefore
-2(x+y) = -8(x+y) - 60
get rid of all those negatives, multiply by -1
2(x+y) = 8(x+y) + 60
-60 = 8(x+y) - 2(x+y)
-60 = 6(x+y)
divide both sides by 6
-10 = x+y
