Question 1118365: When Computing a t-test comparing males' and females' heights, which type of t-test would be appropriate to use? Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
you would not use the paired two sample t-test because you are comparing two separate populations.
you would find the mean and standard deviation of the males and you would find the mean and standard deviation of the females and then you would compare the difference between them.
your null hypothesis would be that the means are the same.
your alternate hypothesis would be that the means are different.
you would be testing to see if the perceived difference between the samples was statistically significant or not.
if the difference was statistically significant, then you could assume that the difference was due to more than just random differences between sample means.
