Question 1118092: I need help in solving this equation.
4P+(1-P)(5.78)= 5
P= 0.438 but i cannot workout how to arrive at that value. Can you please show step by step method of how to arrive at the P value. Thank you. Found 2 solutions by ikleyn, ankor@dixie-net.com:Answer by ikleyn(52864) (Show Source):
Step by step, starting from the very beginning:
4P + (1-P)*5.78 = 5
4P + 5.78 - 5.78P = 5
Collect all the terms with P on the right side.
Collect all the constant terms on the left side.
So, you will move the terms from one side to another.
EACH TIME when you move the terms from one side to another, CHANGE their signs:
5.78 - 5 = 5.78P - 4P.
0.78 = 1.78P
Divide both sides by the coefficient 1.78 at P:
P = = 0.438 is your answer.
Solved.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 4P+(1-P)(5.78)= 5
do the multiply first, distribute 5.78
4p + 5.78 - 5.78P = 5
4p - 5.78p = 5 - 5.78
-1.78p = -.78
p = -1.78/-.78
A minus divided by a minus is plus
p = +.438
