Question 1117378: Hello there! I am studying for the GRE and since I will be taking the online version, I want to know how can I quickly solve the following problem without using a graphing calculator, since I won't have access to one on the test?

Which of the Following points are of the equation y=x+2 and the equation y=x^2 in the xy-plane? Indicate all points.
a. (-2,0)
b. (-1,1)
c. (0,2)
d. (1,1)
e. (2,4)
I would appreciate if you could show me the answer and how you got to it step by step. sorry for taking your time!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I am studying for the GRE and since I will be taking the online version, I want to know how can I quickly solve the following problem without using a graphing calculator, since I won't have access to one on the test?
Which of the Following points are the equation y=x+2 and the equation y=x^2 in the xy-plane? Indicate all points.
a. (-2,0)
b. (-1,1)
c. (0,2)
d. (1,1)
e. (2,4)
------
Method:: eliminate answers rather then apply each one in both equations.
Consider y = x+2
Which of a to e DO NOT have a y-value that is 2 more than the x-value.
a. 0 is 2 more then -2 ; yes
b. 1 is 2 more then -1 ; yes
c 2 is 2 more then 0 ; yes
d. 1 is NOT then 1 so eliminate d
e. 4 is 2 more then 2 ; yes
------
Now do the same with y = x^2 but do Not check d
a. 0 is NOT (-2)^2 so eliminate a
b. 1 is (-1)^2; yes
c. 2 is NOT 0^2: so eliminate c
d. was eliminated
e. 4 is 2^2; yes
-----
Answers b and e
