You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A good one to reason out mentally.
"Carmelo shot twice as many baskets" … that tells you you will have some quantity plus twice that quantity, (or three times some quantity), equal to 42. 42/3 is 14.

Mark shot 14 baskets and Carmelo shot 28 baskets.
————————————
Algebraically:
Let M=number of baskets Mark shot.
then 2M = number of baskets Carmelo shot.
M+2M = 3M = 42 —> M=42/3 = 14. Mark shot 14 baskets, Carmelo shot 2*14=28 baskets.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x be the number of baskets Mark shot and y be the number of baskets Carmelo shot
:
1) y = 2x
:
2) x + y = 42
:
subsitute for y in equation 2 by using equation 1
:
x +2x = 42
:
3x = 42
:
x = 14 and y = 28
