You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let a = no. of apples
let r = no. of oranges
:
a fruiterer had 420 apples and oranges.
a + r = 420
There were 24 more apples than oranges.
a = r + 24
find the number oranges originally, in the first equation, replace a with (r+24)
(r+24) + r = 420
2r = 420 - 24
2r = 396
r = 396/2
r = 198 oranges
then
a = 198 + 24
a = 222 apples
:
He sold 60 apples and bought some oranges.
he then had half as many apples as oranges.
let x = no. of oranges bought
therefore
222 - 60 = 1%2F2(198 + x)
162 = 1%2F2(198+x)
multiply both sides by 2
2 * 162 = 198 + x
324 = 198 + x
324 - 198 = x
x = 126 oranges bought
