You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + x+6 = 171
2x+6 = 171
2x = 165
x = 82.5
82.5/1.5 = 55 mph this is the speed of the other car.
One car is traveling 6mph faster than the other car: 55 + 6 = 61 mph
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So there you have it:
One car: 61mph
The other: 55mph
.
Let x be the speed of the slower car, in miles per hour.
Then the speed of the faster car is (x+6) mph.
The distance equation is
1.5x + 1.5*(x+6) = 171
1.5x + 1.5x + 9 = 171
3x = 171 - 9 = 162  ====>  x = 162%2F3 = 54.
Answer.  The speed of the slower car is 54 mph.  That of the faster car is 60 mph.
Solved.
Any other answer is   W R O N G.
two cars pass on straight highway while traveling in opposite directions. one car is traveling 6 mph faster than the other car. after 1.5 hours the two cars will be 171 miles apart . find the speed for both cars.
Let speed slower car’s speed be S
Then faster car’s speed = S + 6
We then get: 1.5S + 1.5(S + 6) = 171
1.5S + 1.5S + 9 = 171
3S = 162
S, or slower car’s speed = highlight_green%28matrix%281%2C4%2C+162%2F3%2C+or%2C+54%2C+mph%29%29
