You can put this solution on YOUR website! Katie invested a total of $4000, part at 4% simple interest and part at 5% simple interest.
At the end of 1 year, the investments had earned $174 interest.
How much was invested at each rate?
:
let x = amt invested at at 5%
the total invested, is $4000, therefore:
(4000-x) = amt invested at 4%
:
.04(4000-x) + .05x = 174
distribute the .04
160 - .04x + .05x = 174
.01x = 174 - 160
.01x = 14
x = 14/.01
x = $1400 invested at 5%
then
4000-1400 = $2600 invested at 4%
:
:
Check this, find actual amt earned from each
.05*1400 = $70
.04*2600 = $104
-----------------
total earned: $174

-----
Quantity:: r + v = 4000
Interest:: 0.04r + 0.05v = 174
--------------------------------------
Modify for elimination::
4r + 4v = 16000
4r + 5v = 17400
----------------------------
Subtract and solve for "v"::
v = $1400 (amt. invested at 5%)
r = $3600 (amt. invested at 4%)
