Question 1112862: I am still trying to get my head around how to do these questions. I can get the answer but not the way it should be done. Please help.
For a certain bowling league, a beginning bowler computes her handicap by taking 90% of the difference between 220 and her average score in league play. Determine the average scores that would produce a handicap of 72 or less. Also assume that a negative handicap is not possible in this league.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let us define as the variable we are trying to find
x=average score

Percentages are ratios to 100,
and they can be expressed as fractions or decimals:
%2290%25%22=90%2F100=0.9 is the ratio to multiply by.What they tell you in words is
handicap=%28220-x%29%2A0.9

To calculate what x values would yield a handicap of 72 or less,
you start by writing
%28220-x%29%2A0.9%3C=72 , and then solve for x .

%28220-x%29%2A0.9%3C=72
220-x%3C=72%2F0.9
220-x%3C=80
220-80%3C=x
140%3C=x .
So, a player with an average score of 140 or more would have highlight%28x%3E=140%29 , and a handicap of 72 or less.
