You can put this solution on YOUR website! lets call the smaller number x
smaller number = x
Given: the larger number is 9 more than four times the smaller
Write this in terms of x
larger number = 4x + 9
Given: if the larger number is increased by four times the smaller the result is 40
Write this as an equation and solve for x
larger number plus four times smaller equals forty
(4x+9) + 4x = 40
4x + 9 + 4x = 40
8x + 9 = 40
8x = 31
x = 3.875
So the smaller number is 3.875
use this to find the larger number
larger number = 4x + 9
larger number = 4(3.875) + 9
larger number = 15.5 + 9
larger number = 24.5
You can put this solution on YOUR website! if the is more than , then we have:
If the is increased by , the result is , we have:
……….now we can plug in the value for from above, and we will have:
…………………….solve for ………………………….move to the right
Now find : go back to this formula and plug in the value for
