Question 1110678: Steve drove from Woolloomooloo to Kurri Kurri in 3 hours. Julie left Woolloomooloo at the same time, but drove 5km/h slower and arrived in Kurri Kurri 20 mins later than Steve. Find the distance from Woolloomooloo to Kurri Kurri in kilometres,

.
Let "r" be the slower rate, in km/h.

The condition says

3*(r+5) = %2810%2F3%29%2Ar.    (1)

Here 3 is "3 hours",  10%2F3 = 31%2F3 hours = 3 hours and 20 minutes.

From equation (1),

9*(r+5) = 10r  ====>  9r + 45 = 10r  ====>  r = 45.

The slower rate is 45 km/h.  The faster rate is 5 km/h more:  45 + 5 = 50 km/h.

The distance under the question is 3*50 = 150 kilometers.
