 The third friend gets more than the first, who gets more than the second.  To avoid fractions, since the second friend gets the least, let his portion be the variable for the problem.
 
 let x = second friend's portion
 then 2x = third friend's portion  (he gets twice as much as the 2nd)
 then 4*2x = 8x = first friend's portion  (he gets four times as much as the 3rd)
 
 The portions are x, 2x, and 8x.  Write and solve the equation that says the sum of those three portions is $55,000....
