You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +x+ = amount he had in savings
He withdrew +.6x+
He spent +.8%2A.6x+=+.48x+ on shoes
The number of shoes he bought was:
+.48x+%2F+24+
Also, if 80% was spent on shoes, then
+.2%2A.6x+=+.12x+ was the amount left
+.12x+=+60+
+x+=+500+
His original savings was $500
-------------------------------
The number of shoes he bought was:
+.48x+%2F+24+
+%28+.48%2A500+%29+%2F+24+
+240%2F24+=+10+
He bought 10 shoes

He withdrew 60% of the money from his savings and spent 80% of that amount on shoes. So the $60 he had left was 20% of the 60% he withdrew. 20% of 60% is 12%; so $60 is 12% of his original savings.

0.12x+=+60 --> x+=+500

The amount of his original savings was $500.

He withdrew 60% of his savings: .60%2A500+=+300

He spent 80% of that amount on shoes: .80%2A300+=+240

The shoes cost $24 each; the number of shoes he bought was 240%2F24+=+10.
