Question 110805: Could you help me define/show how to solve:
A toll way machine contains $2100 worth of quarters, dimes, and nickels. There are nine times as many dimes as quarters and five times as many nickels as quarters Determine the number of quarters, nickels, and dimes in the collection. Represent with only one variable.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Let:
Quarters+=+q
Dimes+=+d
Nickels+=+n
If nine times as many dimes as quarters, then … => 9d+=+q+
If five times as many nickels as quarters, then … => 5n+=+q
If machine contains $2100 worth of quarters, dimes, and nickels, then:
2100+=+q%2A.25+%2B+d%2A.10+%2B+n%2A.05+
Since
d+=+9q+ and n+=+5q, we will have:

2100+=+q%2A.25+%2B+9q%2A.10+%2B+5q%2A.05+..........all represented in dollars

2100+=+q%2A.25+%2B+q%2A.9q+%2B+.25q+
2100+=+q+%28.25+%2B+.9+%2B+.25%29
2100+=+1.4q
2100%2F1.4+=+q

q+=+1500……………………………….number of quarters

d+=+9%2A1500+=+13500………………….. number of dimes
and n+=+5%2A1500=+7500,………………. number of nickels

check:
2100+=+1500.25+%2B+13500.10+%2B+7500.05+
2100+=+375%2B+1350%2B+375
2100+=+2100
