The planks of wood cost £3.00 per metre and can be bought in length of 250cm.
The planks are 20cm wide and 2cm thick.
How many planks will be needed for the two sides?

the sides of the shelf are each 110 centimeters in length for a total of 220 centimeters.
220 centimeters is less than 250 centimeters, so only 1 board needs to be bought, since 250 centimeters is longer than 220 centimeters.
the cost will be 250 * .03 = 7.5 pounds.
since all you wanted to know was how much for the 2 sides of the shelf, 7.5 pounds appears to be your answer.
