50-x = 3*(24-x) 50-x = 72 - 3x 3x - x = 72 - 50 2x = 22 ====> x = = 11 years ago. Answer. 11 years ago, when the older was 50-11 = 39 years old, and the younger was 24-11 = 13 years old.

The difference in their ages is 26 years; that will never change.

So when the father was three times as old as his son, their ages were 39 and 13.

Since they are now 50 and 24, that was 11 years ago.
