let y equal the price for each banana.
you get x bananas for y price per banana for a total of 120.
your formula becomes x * y = 120.
x is the number of bananas.
y is the price per banana.
when you get 2 bananas for free, the price the vendor gets is 10 less per dozen.
10 less per dozen is equal to 10/12 less per banana.
your new formula is (x+2) * (y - 10/12) = 120
x + 2 is the number of bananas he gets.
y - 10/12 is the price per banana.
put y - 10/12 under a common denominator and you get 12y/12 - 10/12 which is equal to (12y - 10)/12 price per banana.
the new formula becomes (x+2) * (12y-10)/12 = 120.
from x * y = 120, solve for x to get x = 120 / y
replace x with 120/y and the new formula becomes (120/y + 2) * (12y - 10)/12 = 120.
