I would guess that the equation is in fact

3x%5E2+=+3%2A3%2B3%2A6

instead of
%283x%29%5E2+=+3%2A3%2B3%2A6
as interpreted by the other tutor....

Then
3x%5E2+=+9%2B18+=+27
x%5E2+=+9
Giving the solutions x=3 and x=-3.
