Question 1103544: A mix of ingredients fills at a rate of 15 gallons/min. It drains at a rate of 35 gallons/minute. The ingredients start filling at 12:00, at 12:06 the drain is open. Write an equation showing the time it takes to fill or empty after the drain is open?
I know that it will empty before it fills, because it is draining faster than it is filling. I know that 15 x time will tell me that at 12:06 it will have 90 gallons. And that it will add 15 but take away 35. Just having trouble writing the equation.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

At 12:06 there are 90 gallons.

After that, 15 gallons per minute are being added , but 35 gallons per minute are being drained.

At what rate is the number of gallons decreasing per minute after the drain is opened?

Write the equation that tells how many gallons there were at the start (at 12:06) and by how many gallons that number is decreasing each minute.
