You can put this solution on YOUR website! Scenario: Cathleen and Bob were driving together to the beach when their car broke down. Each one was certain of the location of the location of the closest gas station. Bob turned right and walked east for 6 miles while Cathleen walked straight ahead north for 4 miles. How far apart was Cathleen and Bob's new location?
----
Sketch the paths from a single starting point.
You have a horizontal line going 6 miles to the right to (6,0).
You have a vertical line going 4 miles up to (0,4).
----
Connect (0,4) to to (6,0). That is the distance you want.
You have a right triangl
base = 6 ; height = 4
distance = sqrt[6^2+4^2] = sqrt[36+16] = sqrt(52) = sqrt(4*13) = 2*sqrt(13) miles
----------
Cheers,
Stan H.
