a) i) determine the distance travelled by bus
let b = distance traveled by bus
the whole journey is 700 km, therefore
(700-b) = distance traveled by train
subtract the lunch break from the total time: 11.25 -.5 = 10.75 hrs travel time

Write a time equation, time = dist/speed
bus time + train time = 10.75 hrs + = 10.75
get rid of the denominators, multiply equation by 150, cancel and you have
2b + 3(700-b) = 150 * 10.75
2b + 2100 - 3b = 1612.5
2b - 3b = 1612.5 - 2100
-b = -487.5
b = 487.5 km by bus
then
700 - 487.5 = 212.5 km by train
ii) the time makau started travelling by bus. = 6.5 hrs
Find the arrival time: 8:00 + 11:15 = 19:15 or 7:15 PM
7:15 - 6:30 = 12:45 PM he got on the bus
