You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +t+ = Julie's time in hrs mowing alone
Maggie's rate of mowing:
[ 1 lawn mowed ] / [ 6 hrs ]
Julie's rate of mowing:
[ 1 lawn mowed ] / [ t hrs ]
Their rate mowing together:
[ 1 lawn mowed ] / [ 2 hrs ]
----------------------------
Add their rates of mowing to get
their rate mowing together:
+1%2F6+%2B+1%2Ft+=+1%2F2+
Multiply both sides by +6t+
+t+%2B+6+=+3t+
+2t+=+6+
+t+=+3+ hrs
Julie will take 3 hrs to mow the lawn alone
---------------------------------------
check:
+1%2F6+%2B+1%2F3+=+1%2F2+
+1%2F6+%2B+2%2F6+=+3%2F6+
+3%2F6+=+3%2F6+
OK

.
Maggie and Julie mow together 1%2F2 of the lawn area per hour.

Maggie working alone mows 1%2F6 of the lawn area per hour.

It means that Julie mows 1%2F2 - 1%2F6 = 3%2F6 - 1%2F6 = 2%2F6 = 1%2F3 of the lawn area per hour working alone.

Hence, it will take 3 hours for Julie to mow the lawn working alone.
