Question 1100233: The boats have lined up for the Regatta. The boats are lined up by size, smaller boats first. There are 102 canoes in the first row, 93 power boats in the second row, 84 catamarans in the third row, etc. The final row is row #11 and it is for the big yachts.

a. Use the formula for the nth term of an arithmetic sequence to determine the number of yachts in row #11.
b. Use the formula for the sum of an arithmetic sequence to determine the total number of boats in the 11 rows.

.
Arithmetic progression. First term 102. The common difference 9. The number of terms is 11, according to the condition.

a. The number of yachts in row 11 is a%5B11%5D = 102 - (11-1)*9 = 102 - 90 = 12.

b. The total number of boats in all 11 rows is

    %28%28a%5B1%5D%2Ba%5B11%5D%29%2F2%29%2An = %28%28102%2B12%29%2F2%29%2A11 = 627.
