Question 110015: Hi I need help with this problem:
Find the slope-intercept form of the line passing through the point (7,3) and parallel to the line 8x-9y=1. This is a multiple choice question so her e are the choices:
[a] y = 9/8x + 9/29 [b] y = 8/9x - 29/9 [c] y = -8/9x - 29/9
[d] y = 8/9x + 9/29

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The answer is B.
Here is how we may solve it:
8x -9y =1
First, you must isolate the y variable in order to determine the slope
y = 8/9x + 1
Now, we know that the slope of the line is 8/9, and since we know that parallel lines share equal slopes, 8/9 must be the slope for the line which we are solving for.
Plug the point (7 , 3) into the point slope formula using the slope which we just found.
This gives us
y - 3 = 8/9(x - 7)
Multiply negetive seven by 8/9 to get -56/9 and add a positive 27/9. This gives us -29/9 for the y-intercept,
Thus,
y = 8/9x - 29/9
