Question 1099391: How do I answer this question? Isn't Mesut correct because 5/6 of people in the table are over 18? Please help me!
Question:
Mesut is investigating the average age of people who use his local sports centre. On a Monday morning, he asked people at the sports centre their ages. The results are shown in the table:
Age: 12-18 |Frequency:10
Age: 19-30 |Frequency:24
Age: 31-50 |Frequency:12
Age:Over 50 |Frequency:14
Mesut says, "5 in 6 users of the sports centre are over 18. This shows that the sports centre should do more to encourage children and teenagers to use the sports centre."
Give reasons why Mesut's conclusion might not be correct.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
He might be correct, but 19 is a teenager as well, and it is not known how many 19 year-olds go, only the 19-30 group.
Aside from statistics, he is implying that while most of the people are over the age of 18, the fact is that 60% are under 30.
On the other hand, there are a relatively small number of children, since child may be defined differently for different people.
