You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
Your equation is

500*t = 600*(t-0.5),

where t is the time under the question.

The left side is the distance covered by the bomber.

The right side is the distance traveled by the fighter, which spent 0.5 hour less time to cover the same distance.

500t = 600t - 300  ====>  300 = 600t - 500t  ====>  100t = 300  ====>  t = 300%2F100 = 3 hours.

Answer. 3 hours.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
What is the jet bomber's head start in miles:
+d%5B1%5D+=+500%2A%28+1%2F2+%29+
+d%5B1%5D+=+250+ mi
-------------------------
Start a stopwatch when the fighter jet leaves
Let +t+ = time in hrs on stopwatch when
the fighter jet catches the jet bomber
Let +d+ = distance in miles the fighter
jet travels until it catches up with jet bomber
------------------------------------------
Equation for jet bomber:
(1) +d+-+d%5B1%5D+=+500t+
Equation for fighter jet:
(2) +d+=+600t+
---------------------------
(1) +d+-+250+=+500t+
(1) +d+=+500t+%2B+250+
Plug (2) into (1)
(1) +600t+=+500t+%2B+250+
(1) +100t+=+250+
(1) +t+=+2.5+
-------------------
The jet bomber travels for +.5+%2B+2.5+=+3+ hrs
before it reaches the target
----------------------------
check:
(2) +d+=+600t+
(2) +d+=+600%2A2.5+
(2) +d+=+1500+ mi
and
(1) +d+-+250+=+500t+
(1) +d+-+250+=+500%2A2.5+
(1) +d+=+1250+%2B+250+
(1) +d+=+1500+ mi
OK
