Question 1098476: if 1/5 of a certain number is added to 51/5 the sum is the same as when 1/6 of the number is subtracted from 30 2/5 .find the number that is added Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! if 1/5 of a certain number is added to 51/5 the sum is the same as when 1/6 of the number is subtracted from 30 2/5 .
find the number that is added
: n + = 30 - n
make the 3rd term an improper fraction n + = - n
multiply equation by 30, cancel the denominators, resulting in:
6n + 6(51) = 6(152) - 5n
6n + 306 = 912 - 5n
6n + 5n = 912 - 306
11n = 606 is the number
n = 606/11
n = 55, an annoying number for sure.

See if that checks out using decimals, 55(55.091) + = - (55.091)
use decimals here
11.018 + 10.2 = 30.4 - 9.18
21.218 ~ 21.22, close enough to check our solution
