your equation will be x + 11 + x = 75
x + 11 + x = 75
- 11 - 11
x + x = 64
combine like terms
2x = 64
divide both sides by 2
x = 32
your short rope is 32 feet
add 11 to the other rope to get 43
check your work, 32 + 43 = 75
