Question 1097978: At Madison High School each student studies exactly one foreign language. Three-fifths of the students take Spanish, and one-fourth of the remaining students take German. If all of the others take French, what percent of the students take French?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! 3/5 take spanish.
1/4 of the remaining take german.
remaining = 2/5.
1/4 * 2/5 = 2/20 = 1/10
remaining of 2/5 = 2/5 - 1/10 = 4/10 - 1/10 = 3/10.
this makes sense since 2/5 = 4/10 and 1/4 of 4/10 = 1/10 and 3/4 of 4/10 = 3/10.
therefore:
3/5 take spanish.
1/10 take german.
3/10 take french.
since 3/5 = 6/10, you get 6/10 + 1/10 + 3/10 = 10/10 = 1, so all students are accounted for.
your solution is that 3/10 of the students take french.
you can work it as a decimal and you should get the same answer.
3/5 = .6
2/5 = .4
1/4 of .4 = .1
3/4 of .4 = .3
.6 taken spanish
.1 take german
.3 take french.
.6 = 6/10
.1 = 1/10
.3 = 3/10
same answer.
