Thanks for trying again... but you have still left something out of your statement of the problem:

"One number exceeds by 8..."

Exceeds what?!

It is obvious what you mean, so I will go ahead and help you. But the polite thing for you to do would be to give us the whole problem so we don't have to try to figure out what is missing.

"one number exceeds ANOTHER by 8":
Let the smaller number be x; then the other is x+8.

"the sum of the smaller and twice the larger is 40":
x+%2B+2%28x%2B8%29+=+40

I will assume you can finish from there....
