Tom is 16 years old now.

His brother John's age is 4 years now.


Let x = "In how many years", the value under the question.


Then

16 + x = 3*(4+x).


It is your major equation to solve.


16 + x = 12 + 3x  ====>  4 = 2x  ====>  x = 4%2F2 = 2.


Answer.  In 2 years.


Check.   In 2 years, Tom will be 16+2 = 18 years old, while John's age will be 4+2 = 6 years.  The condition is satisfied.
