Question 1096619: Sam is twice as old as Mary and Mary is 5 years older than her sister Kate. The sum of all their ages is 31. Find the age of Kate, Mary and Same respectively that add up to 31. Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Sam is twice as old as Mary and
s = 2m
Mary is 5 years older than her sister Kate.
m = k + 5
or
k = m - 5
The sum of all their ages is 31.
s + m + k = 31
replace s and k
2m + m + (m-5) = 31
4m = 31 + 5
4m =36
m = 36/4
m = 9 yrs is Mary's age
then
s = 2(9)
s = 18 is Sam's age
and
k = 9 - 5
k = 4 yrs is Kate's age
