Question 1095984: I am a 6th grader who is struggling with fractions. I have the following word problem:
Sebastian carried 1/2 liter of water on a hike. He drank 2/3 of the water. How much water did he drink?
I wrote 1/2 - 2/3. I calculated the fractions to have like denominators, which became 3/6 - 4/6. Is the answer (-1/6) correct?

Not quite, because you end up drinking a negative amount of water.
Multiply--when you read (2/3) of something, you are multiplying to find out what that 2/3 equals.
(1/2)(2/3)=2/6 or (1/3)
liter was drunk. That is the answer.
(1/2)-(1/3)=(3/6)-(2/6)=(1/6) is left (not asked for).

No, I'm afraid it's not!
Plus, you can't DRINK a negative number of liters. That tells you that it's DEFINITELY incorrect.
He took matrix%281%2C2%2C+1%2F2%2C+liter%29 and drank
