Question 1095968: Could you please help me with this word problem? Thank you in advance.
The dimensions of a portrait are 10 1/2 in by 14 in. A carpenter wishes to build a frame of uniform width for it so that the outside of the framed portrait is in the ratio of 5:6. Find the width of the frame.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +x+ = the uniform width of the frame
The short dimension of picture + frame =
+10.5+%2B+2x+
The long dimension is:
+14+%2B+2x+
--------------------------
I can say:
+%28+10.5+%2B+2x+%29+%2F+%28+14+%2B+2x+%29+=+5%2F6+
+6%2A%28+10.5+%2B+2x+%29+=+5%2A%28+14+%2B+2x+%29+
+63+%2B+12x+=+70+%2B+10x+
+2x+=+7+
+x+=+3.5+
The width of the frame is 3.5 in
-------------------------------
check:
+%28+10.5+%2B+2%2A3.5+%29+%2F+%28+14+%2B+2%2A3.5+%29+=+5%2F6+
+17.5+%2F+21+=+5%2F6+
+6%2A17.5+=+5%2A21+
+105+=+105+
OK
