Question 1095756: A construction crew foreman is buying k two-by-four boards for farming a house. She is also buying j nail guns for the crew. Each board costs 3.75 and each nail gun costs 159.75. The nail guns are on sale with a 20% discount. Which equation could be used to calculate the total amount of her purchase,t?
A. T=3.75k+159.75j-0.2j
B. T=3.75k+159.75j-0.2j(159.75j)
C. T=3.75k+159.75j+0.2j(159.75j)
D. T=3.75k+159.75j-20(159.75j)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the answer should be:

3.75 * k + 159.75 * j - .2 * 159.75 * j

i would have said selection B, but you have too many j's in there.

the nail guns are on sale with a 20% discount.

the price for each gun is therefore 159.75 - .2 * 159.75.

factor out the 159.75 and you get 159.75 * (1 - .2).

simplify to get 159.75 * .8.

the price of a nail gun is equal to .8 * 159.75 which is equal to 127.8

assume 20 pieces of wood and 5 nail guns.

the total cost should be 3.75 * 20 + 127.8 * 5 = 714.

my formula is 3.75 * k + 159.75 * j - .2 * 159.75 * j

that would be 3.75 * 20 + 159.75 * 5 - .2 * 159.75 * 5

evaluate that formula and you get a total of 714.

the formula i gave you is correct.

none of your selections would come up with the correct answer.

selection B would if you dropped that extra j.

selection B should be T = 3.75k + 159.75j - .2(159.75j).

or it could be T = 3.75k + 159.75j = .2j(159.75).

either one of these would be correct.
