You can put this solution on YOUR website! Car A travels 25 mph faster than Car B. In the same time that Car A travels 266mi, Car B travels 196mi. Find their speeds.
Let the speed of car B be x. Then, the speed of car A = x+25
196/x = 266/(x+25)
let's take the reciprocal of both sides so we can get the variable x on top:
x/196 = (x+25)/266
x/196 = x/266+25/266
get rid of one x, subtract x/265 from both sides (find common denominator)
5x/3724 = 25/266
multiply both sides by 5/3724
x = 25/266 * 5/3724
Multiply across, top and bottom, and simplify:
x = 70 this is the speed of car B
Car A:
x + 25 = 70 + 25 = 95
--------------------------------------
Check:
196/70 = 2.8
266/95 = 2.8
These cars must be on a race track!
