Question 1095145: In the morning, Julie drove to a job interview at 40 mph. Her average speed on the return trip in the afternoon was 30 mph. The return trip took 1/2 hour longer because of heavy traffic. How far did she travel to the job interview? Found 2 solutions by hgv , MathTherapy:Answer by hgv (5) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Distance = Speed * Time
Let time be x
=> Trip to job interview : 40 * x
=> Return trip : 30 * (x + 0.5)
Equating both since distance traveled is the same;
=> 40 * x = 30 * (x + 0.5)
=> 40x = 30x + 15
=> x = time = 1.5 hours
Thus, distance = 40 * 1.5
=> 60 m
Or 30 * (1.5 + 0.5)
=> 30 * 2 - 60 m

Let distance to interview be D
Then time taken to get to interview =
Time taken to return =
We then get the following TIME equation:
3D = 4D - 60 ----- Multiplying by LCD, 120
3D - 4D = - 60
- D = - 60
D, or distance =
How easy was that?
