Let n be the amount Mr. Smith starts with. If he spends 3/10 of his salary, or n, then he has 7/10 left. Similarly, he has 3/7 left after transport, and 1/6th after food. So:
n(7/10)(3/7)(1/6)=500
3n/60=500
n=10000
