Question 1094832: I am having trouble coming up with equation expression for this problem, lol... It's doing my head in! Help! (I am assuming 'he' in second statement refers to "Mike's father" and not Mike)
Mike's father is 8 times as old as Mike. Two years ago he was at most 10 times as old as Luke was. At least how old is Luke? Found 2 solutions by ankor@dixie-net.com, MathTherapy:Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Assume it means:
Mike's father, Luke, is 8 times as old as Mike.
L = 8m
Two years ago he was at most 10 times as old as Luke was.
L - 2 = 10(m-2)
L - 2 = 10m - 20
L = 10m - 20 + 2
L = 10m - 18
Replace L with 8m, from the first statement
8m = 10m - 18
18 = 10m - 8m
18 = 2m
m = 18/2
m = 9 yrs is Mikes present age
:
At least how old is Luke?
L = 8(9)
L = 72 yrs is Luke's present age

Check this in the statement
"Two years ago he was at most 10 times as old as Luke was. "
2 yrs ago Luke is 70 and Mike is 7

Makes absolutely no sense. Who's Luke? If Luke is the father, are you saying that "Two years ago he (Luke) was at most 10 times as old as Luke was?" I repeat: "Makes absolutely no sense!"
