Let the shortest piece be S
Then the other 2 are: S + 4, and S + 8
The equation you're looking for is: S - 5 + S + 4 - 5 + S + 8 - 5 = 45
Reducing this, we get: 3S - 3 = 45 <======= This is the equation you need.
