The difference between two numbers is 44.
x-y+=+44 [x is the larger; y the smaller]

Five times the smaller is equal to 8 more than the larger.
5y+=+x%2B8

Usually if the two equations are given in this form, I use substitution, even though in general I much prefer elimination. Solve the first equation for x and substitute in the second equation.
x+=+y%2B44
5y+=+y%2B+44+%2B+8+=+y%2B52
4y+=+52
y+=+13
x+=+y%2B44+=+57


The two numbers are 13 and 57.
