Question 1091604: #20) You are taking flying lessons to get a private pilot’s
license. The cost of the introductory lesson is 5/8 of the cost of each additional lesson, which is $80. You have a total of $375 to spend on the flying lessons. How many lessons can you afford? How much money will you have left?
#21) Some of your classmates ask you to type their history
papers throughout a 7 week summer course. How much should you charge per
page if you want to earn enough to pay for the flying lessons in Exercise 20
and have $75 left over for spending money? You estimate that you can type
40 pages per week. Assume that you have to take 9 flying lessons plus the
introductory lesson and that you already have $375 to spend on the lessons.
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! the introductory lesson is 5/8 * 80 = 50.
you have 375 dollars.
subtract 50 from 375 and you get 325 dollars.
divide 325 dollars by 80 and you get 4 with a remainder of 5.
therefore, you can pay for 1 introductory lesson plus 4 additional lessons and have 5 dollars left over.
if you want to have 75 dollars left over, you need to earn an additional 70 dollars.
you type 40 pages a week for 7 weeks for a total of 280 pages.
70 dollars divided by 280 pages equals 25 cents a page.
you need to charge 25 cents a pager to earn 70 dollars over a period of 7 weeks.
if you do that, you will have 75 dollars left over at the end of the summer and you will have had an introductory lesson plus 4 additional lessons.
if you need to take 9 additional lessons plus the introductory lesson, and you have already taken the introductory lesson plus 4 additional lessons, then you need to take 5 additional lessons to finish the course.
5 * 80 = 400
subtract the 75 dollars you have left over and you need 325 additional dollars to complete the course.
