The problem can't be solved with the information you show.

EH = 26+x and EG = 23+x --> GH = 3
EG = 23+x and FG = 14+x --> EF = 9

But there is nothing in the given information that lets us determine the value of x, or the length of FG.

You say the answer is supposed to be that EG is 18; since EG is given as 23+x, that means x is supposed to be -5. But you can choose any other value of x, and the given information will still be consistent. And of course a different value for x will give a different length for EG.

So, as you show the problem, it cannot be solved.
