m = 4r
after 5 years, her mother will be three times as old as she will be then.
m + 5 = 3(r+5)
m + 5 = 3r + 15
m = 3r + 15 - 5
m = 3r + 10
replace m with 4r, from the first statement
4r = 3r + 10
4r - 3r = 10
r = 10 yrs is R's age
then
4(10) = 40 yrs is Mom's age
