Question 1090234: This problem is for my online stats class and I am completely lost. Any help would be great!
Construct the confidence interval for the population mean μ.
c=0.95 x=8.7 σ=0.3 and n=56
A 95% confidence interval for μ is (__,___) Round to two decimal places
If you could solve it with step by step instructions that would help because I have numerous problems that are similar to this. Thanks!

You can put this solution on YOUR website! It looks like you have a sample of size 56, a sample mean of 8.7 and a sample standard deviation of 0.3
:
since the sample size is greater than 30, we can use a z-score as the critical value
:
Margin of error(ME) = Critical value x Standard deviation of the statistic
:
confidence level is 95%
:
Compute alpha (α): α = 1 - (95 / 100) = 0.05
critical probability (p*): p* = 1 - α/2 = 1 - 0.025 = 0.975
find associated z-score from z-table = 1.96, this is our critical value
:
ME = 1.96 * 0.3 = 0.588 approximately 0.59
:
***********************************************************
95% confidence interval is 8.7 + or - 0.59, (8.11, 9.29)
