Question 1089420: Given the system of linear equations, -x + y = 5 and 4x + y = 10 I am trying to use substitution to find the solution to this linear equation and algebraically to verify my answer this is how i got thus far
-x + y = 5
4x(-x + y) = 5
-4x + 4y = 5 - 10
-4x = -5
4y = -5
4 4
0 does not = -1 am I doing this right it does not lllook right to me

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-x+%2B+y+=+5.....eq.1
4x+%2B+y+=+10.........eq2
------------------------------------
if you want to use substitution, start with eq.1 and solve it for x or y
-x+%2B+y+=+5.....eq.1 I will solve it or y
-x+%2Bx%2B+y+=+x%2B5
y+=+x%2B5.....substitute it in eq2

4x+%2B+%28x%2B5%29+=+10.........eq2...solve x
4x+%2B+x%2B5+=+10
5x+=+10-5
5x+=+5
highlight%28x+=+1%29
now, go to y+=+x%2B5.....substitute x+=+1 and solve y
y+=+1%2B5
highlight%28y+=+6%29
