Question 1088688: Sam runs for 15 minutes at 8 mph, and then jogs for 45 minutes at 4 mph. What is his average speed during this time?
I have absolutely no idea how I would even begin to do this problem. Thanks for the help. Answer by ikleyn(52814) (Show Source):
The average speed is, by the definition, the total distance divided by total time.
The total distance is = 2 + 3 = 5 miles.
Exlanation. = 15 minutes = 1/4 of an hour.
= 45 minutes = 3/4 of an hour.
The total time is 15 minutes + 45 minutes = 1 hour.
Hence, the average speed is = 5 mph.
