Question 1087987: Jessie and Mark are planning to paint a house together. Jessie thinks that if he works alone, it would take him 5 hours more than the time Mark takes to paint the entire house. Working together, they can complete the job in 6 hours.
QUESTION: If they work together, what equation would repesent the amount of work they can finish in 1 hour?
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let n be the amount of time it takes Mark to finish the house. Then Jessie would be n+5. So:
1/n + 1/n+5=1/6
6n+30+6n=nē+5n
nē-7n-30=0
(n-10)(n+3)=0
n=10 or -3
It would take Mark 10 hours to finish the house alone, and Jessie would take 15
