x+y = 30 subtract x from both sides:
y = 30-x

7x+12y = 265 substitute for y:
7x+12(30-x) = 265 distribute the 12 (Distributive Property of Multiplication)
7x+360-12x = 265
-5x = -95 divide both sides by -5, and remember -/- = +
