18-x gallons are the cans
4x quarts in the first = 8(18-x) in the second (8 pints in a gallon)
4x=144-8x
12x=144
x=12 gallons for one, 48 quarts
18-x=6 gallons for other, 48 pints.

If 18 gal = 144 pints, then 1 gal = 144%2F18 = 8 pints.
